As the hit South Korean drama series Squid Game has become Netflix’s biggest original series and has gained immense appreciation and praise in order to become a global sensation.
Squid Game has drawn more than 111 million fans since its debut less than four weeks ago, especially the role played by Anupam Tripathi, an Indian actor, who portrayed Ali Abdul — a struggling factory worker from Pakistan who’s fighting for his life and family.
As Pakistanis were very much happy to see some positive and prominent representation of them worldwide, but some celebrities and netizens were not happy with the casting. Despite the fact that Tripathi does complete justice to Ali Abdul, few people felt the actor playing the role should have been Pakistani.
Some social media users even suggested a Pakistani version of the popular drama series with their own choice of actors performing the relevant characters.
Also, there is a polling session going viral online to know which actor would be chosen by the public from Squid Game’s characters.
Pakistanis want to know which actor or actress will showcase the relevant character of Joon-Ho, Sang-Woo, Ali Abdul, Sae-Byeok and Gi-Hun. The decisions are completely up to the audience to cast any actor of their choice.
It is pertinent to mention here that the victory of Squid Game increases South Korea’s increasingly outsized influence on global popular culture.
Netflix offers Squid Game in both dubbed and subtitled versions in multiple languages, increasing its potential viewers.
In February, the world’s most popular streaming platform announced plans to spend $500 million this year alone on series and films produced in South Korea.
