Doctor Who fans have been eagerly awaiting news of series 13 – and it seems we might have something big on our hands.

Fans were treated to an unconventional preview of the upcoming episodes as the sky above Liverpool was lit up last night with the projection of a spaceship.

The official Doctor Who Twitter account shared a snap of the projection, writing: ‘Mysterious aircraft seen tonight over the Liverpool docks…’ with new cast member John Bishop (Dan) echoing the message.

For eagle-eyed fans, however, the aircraft isn’t quite that mysterious, as it bears a significant resemblance to the sontaran spaceships in previous episodes.

The sontarans first appeared in Doctor Who in 1973 in The Time Warrior and have made plenty of appearances since, including in a series four story arc.

Their last appearance was in series nine, in the story Face The Raven.

Fans are thrilled with the new look at series 13, with one writing on Twitter: ‘First look at our S13 Sontaran ship!!’

‘ICL THAT’S A GORGEOUS SONTARAN SPACESHIP,’ another said, while one more added: ‘Loving the Sontaran Spaceship.’

Details about Doctor Who series 13 are currently thin on the ground, including a release date, but we do know that the new series is coming this autumn.

Showrunner Chris Chibnall confirmed that the ‘ambitious’ new series will all be one story, as opposed to the episodic stories we usually see from the beloved sci-fi.

Of course, Jodie Whittaker is returning for her final series as the 13th Doctor, alongside returning castmate Mandip Gill (Yaz) and newbies John and Jacob Anderson (Vinder).

It’s thought that the sontarans aren’t the only returning monster either, with former showrunner Steven Moffat letting some spoilers slip on Instagram.

Let’s just say fans will need to keep their eyes (very, very wide) open.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One this autumn.
