Strictly Come Dancing 2021 star Tom Fletcher has vowed to make a special return to the programme after testing positive for Covid-19, teasing what he and his partner Amy Dowden have in store for their comeback.

The day after the first live show of Strictly aired this weekend on BBC One, it was announced that McFly musician Tom and his professional dancer Amy had contracted coronavirus.

The pair, who performed a Cha Cha to September for their first dance, are self-isolating separately in accordance with government guidelines, a Strictly spokesperson said.

The statement from the spokesperson added that while Tom and Amy will miss this week’s live show, they should return the following week ‘all being well’.

While Tom pulled out of a McFly gig due to feeling ‘unwell’ before news of his positive Covid-19 test emerged, Amy revealed in a statement that she has not had any symptoms.

In a comment written underneath Amy’s Instagram post, Tom promised that they’ll have something ‘special’ for viewers when they return to the show.

In her statement, Amy wrote: ‘Unfortunately @tomfletcher and I have tested positive for Covid-19. I’m not suffering any symptoms but am now isolating at home.

‘I have no doubt that over the next 10 days my mind will be going crazy with choreography ideas ready to get back on the strictly dance floor for the live show in week 3!

‘Thank you for all of the support and good luck to all of the couples this week. I will be cheering you all on.’

Tom then wrote underneath it: ‘Rest up partner. We’ve got to pull something special out of the bag for week 3.’

For their first routine, Tom and Amy wound up 12th on the leaderboard out of the 15 couples, with a score of 21 out of a possible 40.

TV presenter Aj Odudu and Kai Widdrington soared to the top of the leaderboard with a score of 34, while Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies and Aljaz Skorjanec wound up at the bottom with a score of 17.

In week one, no couples were eliminated from the competition, with the scores they received from the judges carrying across to week two, when one pair will become the first to go home.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
