Atlanta-based rapper 21 Savage turned himself in to the police on Thursday night following allegations of drug and weapons possession from a publicised incident in early 2019, when he was arrested by immigration officials.
The musician, whose real name is Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is facing two new charges related to his arrest in Atlanta, Georgia.
However, his lawyer Charles Kuck claims the songwriter was not aware of the warrant.
Speaking to TMZ, he said: ‘Last night’s manufactured charges are yet another example of how our justice system, from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) down to the local level, unjustly targets young black men who seek to exercise their rights.’
‘There is no legitimate basis for these charges nor for ICE’s continued antics’, he added, ‘and we will fight until Mr. Joseph is justly vindicated.’
The rapper was taken into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers back in February 2019 but was later released following intense media attention over his arrest.
He is still dealing with legal issues in connection to the situation.
Immigration enforcement became involved because the star is not a legal resident of the US, but in fact a UK resident.
Since his arrest a couple of years ago, the rapper has been taking measures to obtain his green card so he can have permanent citizenship in the States.
21 Savage entered the US in 2005 on a visa. It was also reported that on the night of his arrest he threw away a bottle that had liquid in it, which tested positive for codeine.
Reports also claimed there was a firearm found inside the car 21 Savage was in as well.
He reportedly has an immigration status hearing regarding the case scheduled for November 1.
