Michael K. Williams’ cause of death has been confirmed to be an accidental drug overdose according to New York’s Chief Medical Examiner.
The Wire star, who died at the age of 54, was found dead at the start of September in the living room of his penthouse, by his nephew.
The Medical Examiner has ruled that the case of death was acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine, according to TMZ.
The actor’s death was confirmed by his rep Marianna Shafran on September 6, as she said in a statement to Metro.co.uk: ‘It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams.
‘They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss.’
His death had been suspected to be a drug overdose after he was reportedly found with drugs and drug paraphernalia at the scene.
Police in New York have launched an investigation to track down the source of the drugs that led to Williams’ death.
The Empire actor was one of a string of people who died in accidental fentanyl overdoses, with four comedians dying in Los Angeles on the same weekend due to fentanyl-laced cocaine.
Fentanyl is a powerful opioid which is many times more potent than heroin, meaning users can unknowingly administer a lethal dose if a dealer has laced heroin with fentanyl.
Williams was best known for playing Omar on The Wire, as well as Chalky White on Boardwalk Empire.
Williams also starred in HBO telefilm biopic Bessie and had supporting roles in other film and TV shows such as The Road, 12 Years A Slave, When They See Us and The Night Of.
The five-time Emmy nominee had also recently been announced to play Doc Broadus in an upcoming George Foreman biopic.
