The latest Nintendo Direct has given Bayonetta 3 its first proper trailer and confirmation that it’s out next year.

It’s four years since Bayonetta 3 was first announced and only now is it getting its first gameplay trailer, as the game became the finale for Thursday night’s Nintendo Direct.

The trailer was only a few minutes long, but you got to see Bayonetta herself, her weird new hairdo, and lots of giant demon monsters wrecking a city.

It’s not been confirmed but it certainly doesn’t sound like Hellena Taylor is still the voice of the main character, which is something that was already rumoured.

There was no explanation of the story, but the original teaser seemed to imply time travel and/or Bayonetta dying – or at least those were the main fan theories.

The new haircut looks very similar to Cereza, the younger version of Bayonetta from the original games, so there may well be something funny going on with time travel after all, with perhaps multiple versions of the character in the game.

Perhaps the Bayonetta in the trailer is Cereza, with a purposefully younger sounding voice, and the ‘real’ Bayonetta is older and still being voiced by Taylor? Or maybe Taylor’s just purposefully trying to sound younger and they’re all her?

Or perhaps Nintendo is trying to save money by only hiring non-union actors, which is something it has done many times before. It really could be either explanation and until there’s an official announcement we won’t know for sure.

Bayonetta 3 will be released in 2022, as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, but there was no indication of when. Although if it was going to be early spring you’d assume they would’ve said that.

As the last trailer of the evening, that also meant there was no new information on Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, which is also due in 2022 but has no specific date or time frame.
